Gordon Primary School Fundraising

Welcome to the
Gordon School Green Team

We have set up a Green Team of 5 enthusiastic parents and with the help of the school staff want to make the gardens a safe and enjoyable space for pupils and staff.

This past year several large huts, which were used for munitions manufacture in WW1, have been demolished by the council leaving lots of vacant space within the school grounds. One of the areas has been converted into an astroturf sports pitch but the remaining areas have been made into gardens and natural spaces.

Our new areas are already encouraging wildlife and insects. We are hoping to teach children how to grow food and look after their class growing areas, whilst learning the important message of recycling and reducing food waste.

Since May 2021 the Green Team have:

• Planted 115 trees donated by the Woodland Trust and these are only small but are growing nicely!

• Laid 100m 2 turf to create a new area for the children to sit and play.

• Planted 180 spring bulbs.

• Built 18 raised beds / growing areas to enable each class to grow their own fruit and vegetables and use their school-grown food to create meals in the newly created kitchen. We filled 2 of the beds and harvested strawberries, tomatoes, cucumbers and potatoes

• Ran a sunflower growing competition where each child received 3 seeds from the same batch of sunflowers from the previous year (£400+ raised)

• Held a Pumpkin Parade where children brought in their pumpkins for judging and then pumpkins were chopped up and used for compost (£120+ raised)

Current 2021/22 Plan:

Raise funds to buy:

• soil to fill the 16 remaining raised beds / growing areas

• seeds and plants in the spring

• tools
